SECURITY PRECAUTIONS
EMAIL ACCOUNTS
Use a disposable email account for post at this site. It is generally recommended that you use different disposable emails for all purposes; personal, business, subscriptions, etc. I change mine as soon as spam starts.
When selecting an email address, be careful to disguise your online identity. Do not use your first or last name or abbreviations of your name in your email address. Do not use a place, nickname or your date of birth. Any personal detail can help in identifying you.
When accessing this or similar sites, do not use any ‘hotspot’ (with or without a password) or any router with WEP encryption. Do not use a friend’s, neighbor’s or your girlfriend’s email address or computer (look at what happened to Gary McKinnon).
PASSWORDS
Use different passwords for each email, access and membership account. Do not use birthdates, important years in your life, or your pet’s name.
DO NOT KEEP YOUR PASSWORD TYPED OR WRITTEN DOWN.
Passwords should be at least six characters long. Use a memorable phrase like ‘To Be Or Not To Be’, and convert it into first letters and numbers – ‘2b0N2b”.
Change your passwords every 3 to 6 months. More if you suspect active attempts to uncover them.
The ideal password is a random combination of letters and numbers. I mash the keyboard and memorize what comes out.
When sending emails, chatting online and leaving posts, avoid using characteristic phrases or idiosyncratic sign-offs. Search programs can identify these patterns, in the same way as they flag key words used in association with certain subjects under scrutiny.
I would list the key danger words here, but….
Do not use voice chat online without some form of voice scrambler.
Log out of all web applications and close browsers after use. If you are using an internet café or similar, use cash, beware of CCTV that may record your computer use, and wipe down the keyboard for prints afterwards.
Always be aware of possible surveillance, electronic and otherwise when you are entering passwords. There presently exists audio-surveillance technology that can identify individual keystrokes by sound only.
Do not share your password with friends, family members or anyone online, no matter what their apparent reason or need.
I take no responsibility for any visitors to this site.
